Our everyday costume...

Our country can be proud of beautiful costumes that are different in every corner of Slovakia. In the past, costume was called folk clothing and was mainly associated with the rural population. The origin and development of costumes was directly determined by natural and socio-economic factors that influenced the material composition and its artistic rendering. Other materials were used in flat areas and others in foothill regions.

The Slovak Costume Day event brings together people who are lovers of traditions, folklore, and costumes from all over Slovakia. Slovak Costume Day is a unique event focused on the spread of traditions, the presentation of Slovak folk costumes, and the presentation of Slovak municipalities, regions, and Slovak cultural heritage. The goal of the event is to highlight Slovak traditions, the diverse diversity of customs in Slovak towns and villages, the art and beauty of costumes, and to bring the Slovak folk art closer to the younger generation so that they are proud of their ancestors and their cultural heritage. The goal is also to point out regional specificities, the diversity of Slovakia, the artistic side of folk clothing, but also the diversity of music and dance folklore in various forms. The purpose of the event is to give ordinary people, but also folklore bodies, the opportunity to present themselves, their community, and their costume. Visitors can enjoy a rich programme with folklore ensembles from all over Slovakia.

During the second year of the event in 2019, a total of 3,882 people dressed in costumes on the Square of the Slovak National Uprising, entered the Slovak Book of Records.
