Christmas is coming to Špania Dolina is a cultural event organised in the mining village of Špania Dolina, whose modern history began to be written in 2005.
Its essence is based on the historical customs of local residents, who in the pre-Christmas period, started with the feast of St. Nicholas 6.12. They met and prepared together for the Christmas holidays, where they prepared typical Christmas meals in the circle of family and friends, baked popular Christmas delicacies, which included traditional wafers in particular, and made Christmas decorations, while these meetings were always characterised by a joyful and good atmosphere with the expectation of the most beautiful holidays to come of the year.
In 2003, the Song Archive of Roman Neradný was published by Horný Fišer, a native and old-time settler from Španá Dolina, and in this archive readers were interested in traditional Christmas songs connected with the above-mentioned preparations for Christmas. It was this fact that triggered the idea of reviving the tradition of joint meetings of the inhabitants of Špania Dolina in the run-up to Christmas, which was then revived for the first time in 2005. Since this year, a cultural event has been organised annually under the name Christmas is coming to Špania Dolina.
In the modern history of the event, it is characterised by the fact that it is organised in the form of creative workshops, and its goal is not only to unite the inhabitants of Špania Dolina, but also to attract as many visitors as possible and thus to promote the brand of the village. Although the creative workshops of this event do not have a constant character and the cast of masters who offer training in the craft production of food, ornaments, and handmade gifts changes every year, the most popular are baking wafers, making straw decorations for Christmas trees, dolls from husks, and drumming. and gingerbread decoration. The event is particularly successful with children, and its attendance tends to increase every year.
