Central Slovak Museum in Thurzo's house is one of the icons of the city of Banská Bystrica
It is located on the SNP square opposite the stone fountain from the 17th century. Since 1958, after a large and complex reconstruction, the Central Slovak Museum has been housed in the Thurzo's house. Thurzo's house went through many renovations that were necessary to preserve the house as we know it today. The last reconstruction was carried out in 2019 - 2022. The results of the reconstruction and research are presented in an animated video document forming part of the permanent exhibition "Transithistory". This exhibition was opened on 25/06/2022 on two above-ground floors in the Thurzo's house and offers a comprehensive view of the development and history of the house, the city, and the region.
The starting point, but also the goal of the new permanent exhibition Tranzithistory, is the history of Banská Bystrica and its surroundings. The permanent exhibition contains more than 2,000 collection items from the fund of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology, and fine arts. As part of the exhibition, visitors can walk through the prospectus, where they can see minerals, semi-finished products, and finished products from these minerals in the showcases. On the river paths, you can get to know the lives of loggers, coal miners, or rafters who worked in the Banská Bystrica region. Later, the visitor will find himself in the gentleman's lounge, but also in the ladies' wardrobe, where he can try on the clothes of that time and take a picture in them. The last point of the tour is a visual demonstration of the museum depository.
The show is realised in a visually appealing form, a combination of traditional and innovative elements. The exposition is divided in such a way that visitors go from local to regional history. For the most part, the exposition is devoted to the idea of trade and trade routes, which were an integral part of the history of Banská Bystrica and the associated mining.
In Thurzo's house, in addition to the permanent Tranzhistory exhibitions, you can also walk through the green hall, which is known for its rare painting decoration from the end of the 15th century. This painting is one of the jewels of late Gothic wall painting in Slovakia.
