Church of the Holy Cross or Slovak Church?
The Church of the Holy Cross is built next to the northern wall, which is part of the church. The church is located between the Miner´s and Pisárská bastions. It was originally a one-nave church. Master Hanuš was the builder. The church and sanctuary are characterised by their irregular shape due to the location of the Scribe Bastion. The development of the building was difficult, which is also revealed by the presbytery. After building the so-called Matej's House, the church was extended to it in 1492.
The exterior of the church consists of an attic, in which the bricked-up window on Matej's House can be seen in outline, the western part of the church, which consists of a late-Gothic portal with a curtained extension, a chapel - built along the southern side, which was extended to its current level in 1561, and a century later both spaces they rebuilt it into a double nave, columns between the naves, carved from the wall between the naves, a side entrance, walled up on the south side of the nave. The walled side entrance is visible from the outside in outline; from the inside it is visible as a niche containing the altar of the Virgin Mary. Later, when the Jesuits administered the church, it received a Baroque interior and windows. The interior of the church consists of a late-Renaissance baptistery from 1652 - the work of Ján Weinhardt from Spišské Vlachy, frescoes depicting the Transfiguration of the Lord on Mount Tábor, the Last Judgment, and the sending of the Holy Spirit to the apostles on Pentecost. These are on the north side.
Originally a one-nave building attached to the wall of the castle fortifications, the late Gothic portal with intersecting bars from the end of the 15th century has been preserved in the baroque division of the facades. It stands on the site of the former mortuary. In the interior of the church, the main artistic element is a classicist column-type altar with composite capitals, which dates from 1834. In the middle of the altar is a sculpture of the Crucifixion with statues of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, the author of which is Vavrinec Dunajský. On the sides, on the pedestals, there are sculptures of Jesuit saints and two statues of angels in the extension.
The Church of the Holy Cross was visited by Slovak residents of Banská Bystrica, therefore, it is often referred to as the Slovak Church.
