Square of the Slovak National Uprising is the central square in Banská Bystrica, declared a city monument reserve in 1955.
The town houses are situated on long, narrow plots with a staggered arrangement, respecting the medieval layout of the city with a lenticular main square. The construction of brick houses was carried out mainly after a fire in 1500, which destroyed all the wooden buildings. Its development was associated with increasing mining. While in the Gothic and Renaissance the houses were finished with high attics, in the Baroque and Classicism periods the character of architecture changed and additional floors were added by re-facades of buildings. In 1526, the square was the center of a miners' uprising. In 1937, the square was called Masarykovo square. On 30 October 1944, the then president Jozef Tiso honoured the German soldiers who participated in the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising in the square. He also made a speech on this occasion. The square was reconstructed in 1994, when it became a pedestrian zone.
On the square of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrtica, there are several rare historical buildings that create an unmistakable atmosphere, such as: Thurzo House, Pribicier House, Benický House, Kammerhof, Ebner House, Imperial House (Caraff House), Bishop's Palace, Clock Tower , the Cathedral of St. František Xaverský, Marian Column, Stone Fountain and others.
