Bastion near Lazovná gate - part of the Banská Bystrica city fortifications
The Bastion near Lazovná gate, which is located on Katovná street near the original, but now defunct, outer city Lazovná gate, was built in the second half of the 16th century and is one of the seven preserved bastions of the city fortifications of Banská Bystrica.
In the past, it was called Debnárska, but also Nožiarska Bastion, because most medieval bastions were named after the craft guilds that participated in their construction. Later, the Bastion near the Lazovná gate was attached to the back yard strip of the Burgher's house, which was built in the 19th century on Lazovná street no. 19 and was probably also used for housing. The Park of Culture and Recreation Administration was located in this townhouse, and the bastion, which was also accessed from Katovná Street, was used for creative workshops. In May 2013, the Laputa civic association leased the bastion with the aim of renovating it and establishing a Residential Literary House in it.
The bastion near the Lazovná gate is part of the city's fortification system, which was built over many decades, and after its completion, the walls measured more than 3,700 metres. They were fortified with eighteen bastions and five main gates. The fortification of the city castle played a key role in the construction of the fortification, but the fortification of the city centre was also an autonomous part of it. The first mention of the walls around the city outside the territory of the castle area comes from the second half of the 15th century, at the end of the 16th century the entire perimeter of the city was already surrounded by walls. Today, parts of the complete original system have been preserved in several parts of the city.
